An ITV worker leaked video of Lorraine Kelly “engaging” with the program’s leaders when she started her career. That’s precisely why she was removed from the show quickly.

Lorraine Kelly is one of the most familiar faces on British television, having fronted her own daytime show for more than two decades.

However, her career wasn’t always smooth sailing.

In a recent interview, the 65-year-old presenter reflected on a difficult period in her early career when she was unexpectedly let go from a role at ITV.

A Career Setback That Left Lorraine Kelly Reeling

Lorraine opened up about the moment she was fired just months into a job, a decision that left her feeling devastated.

The presenter, who had moved to London to further her broadcasting career, was preparing to return from maternity leave in 1994 when she was informed she had been replaced.

Speaking about the experience, Lorraine explained that the timing of the decision made it even more challenging. “Rosie was teeny-tiny. We’d just moved south, we had a mortgage, and it was scary to have that peeled away from you,” she shared.

At the time, she was not a permanent staff member, which meant she had no job security. “I wasn’t a member of staff. I didn’t have any rights. I didn’t get maternity pay,” she revealed. Looking back, she believes the workplace has evolved since then. “I’d like to think we’re a bit more enlightened these days, and that wouldn’t happen.”

From Humble Beginnings to TV Stardom

Before becoming a household name, Lorraine started her career in journalism. In 1983, she took her first step into broadcasting as a researcher for BBC Scotland. Her talent for storytelling and on-screen presence quickly led her to a role as a correspondent for Scotland’s TV-am just a year later.

Her big break came when she joined GMTV in 1993, where she co-hosted alongside Eamonn Holmes. However, her time on the morning show was abruptly cut short when she was replaced by Anthea Turner while on maternity leave.

Despite this setback, Lorraine was determined to bounce back. She worked tirelessly to rebuild her career, proving her resilience in an industry known for its unpredictability.

The Uncertainty of Being a Freelancer

Even after years of success, Lorraine admits that the insecurity of being a freelancer has never truly left her. She has always tried to have other projects on the go, ensuring she had a backup plan if television work dried up.

“I have always tried to have something else to fall back on, whether it be radio, newspaper columns, or novels,” she explained.

Her diverse career choices reflect her determination to stay relevant and adaptable in an ever-changing industry. She has written books, contributed to major publications, and even explored radio, proving that her talents extend far beyond television presenting.

Building a Legacy in Daytime Television

While the setback in the 1990s was a tough blow, it ultimately didn’t hold Lorraine back. She went on to establish herself as one of the most respected and beloved presenters in British television. Over the years, she has fronted several popular programmes, but it is her self-titled show, Lorraine, that has cemented her legacy.

Having hosted Lorraine for more than 20 years, she has become known for her warm and engaging interviewing style, making her a favorite among viewers. Her ability to connect with guests and audiences alike has set her apart, allowing her to remain at the top of her game.

A Reflection on How the Industry Has Changed

Looking back on her career, Lorraine acknowledges that the television industry has evolved since she was first let go all those years ago. There is now a greater awareness of workers’ rights, particularly for freelancers and women returning from maternity leave.

Despite facing challenges, Lorraine has proven time and time again that resilience and determination can lead to lasting success. She has built an impressive career, overcoming obstacles and showing aspiring broadcasters that setbacks don’t have to define their futures.

For Lorraine, being axed from ITV early in her career was a tough moment, but it became a stepping stone to greater achievements. Now, decades later, she continues to thrive in the industry, showing no signs of slowing down.
