Amy Robach and TJ Holmes, who used to work at GMA, say they have figured out why ABC executives let go of several employees at the same time: “Their circumstances mirrored ours!”

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes were deeply shaken by the recent news of mass layoffs at ABC News,

including the staff of GMA3, the show they once co-hosted before their highly publicized exit in 2023.

The couple, now co-hosts of the iHeartRadio podcast Amy & T.J., took to their platform to express their sorrow over the situation,

sharing their emotional response to the sudden job losses.

A Heartbreaking Announcement

The layoffs, which saw over 200 employees lose their jobs, were part of a larger restructuring effort by Disney, which owns ABC News.

As a result, GMA3 was absorbed under the umbrella of Good Morning America, leading to the dismissal of its entire staff. For Robach and Holmes, the news hit particularly hard, given their close relationships with the team that had been there since the show’s inception.

“That entire staff are folks who were with you from the very beginning, with me from the very beginning when we started off that show, and they’re all gone now,” Holmes lamented during the podcast episode.

Robach struggled to hold back tears as she reflected on the loss, acknowledging the emotional weight of the situation.

“I’m going to try not to get emotional,” she said, her voice shaking. “I felt so sad for all of those people who have worked so hard on that show, and I just felt so frustrated that things happened the way they happened.”

A Painful Goodbye to a Beloved Show

Robach and Holmes, who left GMA3 in January 2023 following the revelation of their relationship, admitted that they had not watched the show since their departure. However, their absence from it was not due to bitterness, but rather because of how much they had loved their time on the program.

Holmes described the GMA3 team as “the little engine that could,” emphasizing how hard they worked behind the scenes to make the show a success.

“Anybody that loses a job, your heart goes out to them,” he said. “But these are folks that we saw day in, day out, grinding, not getting attention. They put their all into it.”

Robach echoed his sentiments, explaining that she had avoided watching the show after leaving because it was too painful.

“It wasn’t because we were saying, ‘Oh, forget them.’ No, we loved it so much,” she said. “We were so passionate about it that I actually couldn’t stomach watching because it was too hard.”

What Could Have Been

The couple revealed that if it had been up to them, they would have remained on GMA3 for years to come. The sudden end to their time on the show, along with the recent layoffs, made them reflect on what could have been.

“We were always rooting from a distance for that show,” Holmes admitted. “So to hear now that the show is going to continue, but everybody associated with it has been let go… That show doesn’t exist the way we saw it, the way we started it, the way we left it.”

Robach added that she would have gladly continued hosting the program for decades if given the opportunity.

“At that point, this was the dream job,” Holmes agreed. “We got to do news, a little entertainment, a little inspiration. It was the perfect show, and we got to do it together. This was a show we did not want to leave.”

Looking Forward, but Never Forgetting

Since their departure from GMA3, Robach and Holmes have focused on their podcast, where they discuss a mix of news, personal experiences, and their relationship. Despite moving on to new endeavors, they have never lost their appreciation for the platform that brought them together professionally and personally.

While the mass layoffs at ABC News mark the end of an era for GMA3 as they knew it, the duo remains grateful for the time they spent on the show. Their heartfelt words on their podcast not only reflected their deep sadness but also their enduring respect for the team they once worked alongside.

As the future of GMA3 takes a new direction, Robach and Holmes will undoubtedly continue supporting their former colleagues from afar, never forgetting the impact the show had on their lives.
